Ibiza

The municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja is in the north of the island in "Es Amunts", a natural area of special interest. It is the municipality with the fewest inhabitants on the island 4,194 people. It is 22km away from the capital and is made up of 4 parishes: Sant Joan de Labritja, Sant Miquel de Balansat, Sant Vincent de Sa Cala and Sanr Llorenc de Balafia, which together form a group of small urban groupings with a rural character.

More than anything, Sant Joan de Labritja offers exceptional countryside with green mountains spotted with white cottages. The landscape is also made up of fertile crfop fields, coves and beaches with crystal-clear water, hidden between steep cliffs. It is a paradise for divers and those who enjoy hiking and excursions. This municipality also has various centres of great histoorical and cultural interest. The rural churches are monuments of great beauty, highly charachteristic of traditional Ibizan architechture. They are centuries-old buildings with thick stone walls with outdoor paved courtyards with samm cemeteries next to them. Cova des Cuiera is in Sant Vincent de Sa Cala. It is a Punic sanctuary that was dedicated to the goddess Tanit 25 centuries ago. Scientific excavations begin in 1807 and some 1600 terracotta female statues were found inside the shrine. They are now exhibited in the Puig des Molins Archaeological Museum. In the port of Sant Miquel de Balansat you can find the Cueva de Can Marco, a natural cave more than one hundred thousand years old created by a tidal erosion. It is a wet cave with long passage ways marked by the fancifully shaped stalactites and stalagmites formed throughout time by the erosion of the limestone rock. The highlight of the village of Saint Llorenc is Barafia, a collection of typical country houses with two defense towers with extremely beautiful interioirs, which are of remarkable architectural interest. There are several lookout towers located on the coast int the Pitiusan Islands. Two such towers can be found in the municipality of Sant Joan - Torre des Molar and Tporre de Portinatx. Both date back to the eighteenth century and were built as look out points to defend against pirate attacks.

Pitiusan cuisine has been influences by the very history of the islands. Succulant dishes characteristic of Ibiza are made of produce from the land and sea and the municipality of Sant Joan, there is a large number of good restaurants.
